This is the one that catches couples off guard the most. If you're planning to elope on a Maui beach, you need a permit. It doesn't matter how small your group is or how simple the setup. The permit is what gives you the legal right to hold a ceremony at that location.

Permits have lead times, limited availability on popular dates, and specific rules attached to them. Getting this wrong can mean arriving at your dream ceremony location and not being able to use it. Your local photographer handles permitting as part of the process, so that's never a risk you're taking.

Keep your guest count under 20 for a beach ceremony

Beach elopements and intimate ceremonies on Maui are permitted for groups of under 20 guests. If your group is larger than that, the permit requirements change and your location options shift. You still need an officiant and they need to be legally registered

Hawaii has specific requirements around who can legally marry you. Your officiant needs to be registered with the State of Hawaii Department of Health before your ceremony. This isn't something to figure out last minute. Book your officiant early, confirm their registration status, and make sure they have experience with outdoor beach ceremonies because wind, waves, and ambient noise are real factors.

The legal paperwork happens before you arrive

Hawaii marriage licenses are issued by the State of Hawaii and must be obtained before your ceremony.

You can apply online, but there are processing times, and both of you need to be present to pick it up.

Your officiant typically handles the filing after the ceremony, but confirming this ahead of time means nothing gets missed.
